Rogów Opolski Castle, located in the heart of the Opole Voivodeship, is one of the region’s most interesting monuments. Its history, dating back to the Middle Ages, reflects political and architectural changes, and its current appearance is the result of numerous conservation efforts. Over the centuries, the castle has served various functions and has become an important landmark in Silesian history. Today, it attracts both history enthusiasts and tourists alike. 

The first records of the Rogów Opolski estate come from 1393, when Herfert Pause the Younger, steward to King Louis of Hungary, sold the village to brothers Jan and Adam von Beess. At that time, the castle was still a simple fortress serving defensive purposes.

At the end of the 15th century, the estate became the property of the Rogowski family, who expanded and rebuilt the existing structure. In the 16th century, the estate passed to the Wrbsky family, who managed it for the next 135 years. After Prussia’s takeover in 1741, the Wrbsky family lost the castle and was forced to leave the estate..

In 1757, the Rogów estate was purchased by Count Henry Adolf von Roedern of Krapkowice. After his death, around 1760, the castle passed into the hands of Count Karl Wilhelm von Haugwitz, who transformed the building into a noble manor house. In the 19th century, under the rule of Karl’s son, Christian Heinrich Kurt von Haugwitz, the castle underwent further expansion. The western wing was added in a neoclassical style, and an English-style landscaped park was established. After Heinrich von Haugwitz’s death in 1932, the estate passed to the Danish branch of the Haugwitz family. After World War II, the property was nationalized. The less damaged part of the castle housed a kindergarten and later a grain warehouse. 

In 1964, the castle was transferred to the Provincial Public Library in Opole, which carried out the building’s restoration. After renovation, the castle opened a library branch that became a repository for valuable collections, including ancient prints, manuscripts, maps, and historical documents. 

According to local legend, Rogów Opolski was a Templar stronghold, who built a fortress surrounded by water, with underground tunnels connecting it to their main estate in nearby Otmęt. 

The castle houses a branch of the Provincial Public Library in Opole, which preserves unique collections, including incunabula, manuscripts, and correspondence of the Haugwitz family. Among the unique documents are letters from the English poet Lord Byron. Of particular note are four incunabula, including the Missale Vratislaviense printed in 1499. 

The castle also offers facilities for conferences and business meetings, with a conference room for 50 people and an intimate fireplace room for 30 people. Guests can also use lodging available in the castle and in the nearby “House under the Rooster.”
