The European Route of Castles and Palaces is a cross-border initiative aimed at promoting and preserving the architectural heritage of regions in Poland, the Czech Republic, and Germany. This project focuses on the castles and palaces of Silesia, Saxony, and Eastern Bohemia, striving to create a cohesive tourist offering that attracts history and architecture enthusiasts. Coordinated by the Lower Silesian Tourist Organization, the route was launched in 2013. Its goal is not only to promote tourism but also to intensify cross-border cooperation and marketing of these historic sites. Joint efforts within the European Route of Castles and Palaces concentrate on the promotion and development of tourism.

This route is not just a collection of monuments but primarily an international cooperation platform, enabling owners and managers of castles and palaces to exchange experiences, share best practices in restoration and management, and integrate promotional activities. Inclusion of a site on the route’s list raises its prestige, attracting not only individual tourists but also investors and cultural event organizers.

The Opole Voivodeship became part of the European Route of Castles and Palaces through participation in the project “Castles and Palaces Connect Us II,” implemented from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2026. The Opole Regional Tourist Organization acts as the project partner representing the Opole Voivodeship. Adding castles and palaces from the Opole region to this prestigious route marks a significant step toward strengthening regional promotion efforts and increasing tourist traffic. Such development of tourism initiatives draws greater interest in the history and culture of the Opole region.

Currently, the following sites in the Opole Voivodeship belong to the European Route of Castles and Palaces: the Bishop’s Palace in Nysa, the Palace in Rozkochów, Bożejów Castle, Sulisław Palace, the Upper Castle in Opole, the Piast Tower in Opole, Moszna Castle, Niemodlin Castle, Większyce Palace, the Castle in Rogów Opolski, and the Dukes of Brzeg Castle. Each of these structures has a unique history and architecture, constituting a valuable element of the region’s cultural heritage. Many have witnessed key historical events, such as the Silesian wars, border changes, and social revolutions. Today, thanks to conservation efforts and promotional initiatives, these castles and palaces are regaining their former glory and opening to visitors, offering not only tours but also opportunities to participate in cultural events, concerts, festivals, and thematic workshops. The inclusion of Opole’s castles and palaces in the route is of great importance for regional development. Cultural tourism is a key component of the voivodeship’s development strategy, with historical sites playing a special role. Thanks to proper promotion and financial support, further restoration and adaptation to contemporary needs are possible. Besides economic benefits, this project also contributes to raising residents’ awareness about the importance of protecting cultural heritage and its value for future generations.

The European Route of Castles and Palaces is not only an offer for tourists seeking historical attractions but also an example of effective international cooperation aimed at preserving and promoting shared cultural heritage. Thanks to this initiative, the Opole Voivodeship gains an additional tool to shape its image as a tourist-attractive region open to collaboration in the protection and promotion of historical heritage.
