Historical Background

The Bishop’s Palace in Nysa, constructed at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, was the residence of the bishops of Wrocław. Construction began in the first half of the 17th century but was halted due to the Thirty Years’ War. Building resumed in the second half of the 17th century and was completed in 1729 during the episcopacy of Bishop Franz Ludwig von Neuburg. The palace, an example of Silesian Baroque architecture, was built on the site of an earlier Gothic castle.

Throughout its history, the building served various functions. It was the site of a meeting between Emperor Joseph II and King Frederick II and was also the residence of Jérôme Bonaparte during the Napoleonic campaign. After secularization in 1810, it became a courthouse. Severely damaged by fire in 1945, the palace underwent extensive restoration. In 1984, it opened as the County Museum, which continues to operate in this historic building today.

Visiting and Tourist Attractions

Today, the Nysa Museum not only displays rich collections of art and applied crafts but also serves as a center for scientific research, education, and the promotion of the region’s history and culture. Permanent exhibitions such as “Witch Trials on the Nysa-Jeseník Border,” “Military Artifacts – Bazyli Rogowski Hall,” “Behind the Threshold of the Bourgeois House in Nysa 1860–1960,” and “Directors of the Nysa Museum: Stanisław Kramarczyk and Franciszek Pikuła” offer an excellent opportunity to learn about the historical heritage of this part of Silesia. Special attention is given to the conservation of monuments and the organization of cultural events that enrich the city’s educational and tourist offerings.

The museum also organizes educational workshops that allow younger generations to explore Nysa’s past interactively. It collaborates with other cultural institutions to organize thematic exhibitions and artistic events such as concerts and theatrical performances.

In recent years, the museum has significantly expanded its online presence, offering virtual tours and digital access to its collections. These efforts have earned the institution recognition not only nationally but also internationally as an important center for historical education.
